EIS members join the NASUWT in rejecting attempts to worsen conditions of service for Scottish teachers
Responding to the news that members of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) have rejected in a ballot attempts to worsen their working conditions, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the fastest growing teachers’ union in Scotland, said:
“The NASUWT welcomes the decision of EIS members to reject the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities’ (COSLA) proposals to worsen teachers' conditions of service.
“The NASUWT has consistently opposed in meetings all attempts to worsen pay and conditions of service and the Union’s National Executive rejected these proposals weeks ago.
“Our members have been absolutely clear that teachers’ workload is excessive and the COSLA proposals would exacerbate this.
“The employers should be clear that whilst NASUWT is always prepared to continue discussions it will never agree to proposals which will undermine teachers’ ability to focus on teaching and learning.
“The current package does just that, hence the rejection by the profession.”
Jane Peckham, NASUWT Scotland Organiser said:
“NASUWT members are already following national action instructions designed to protect them against already excessive workload and in anticipation of these further attempts by the employers to worsen conditions of service.
“I am pleased that EIS members have now taken the same stance as members of the NASUWT.”
