ESC condemns Government for failing to protect tenants’ lives
Commenting on Eric Pickles’ announcement on driving up standards in the private rented sector, Phil Buckle, Director General of the Electrical Safety Council (ESC), said:
“While it is pleasing to see the Government focusing on improving standards for tenants in the private rented sector, today’s announcement falls short on protecting tenants’ lives.
“Tackling rogue landlords and improving damp and hygiene of properties is vitally important but government has failed to set out how it will protect tenants from potentially lethal properties that have unsafe electrics.
“The Government’s own data shows that half of all fires in GB homes are caused by electricity and independent research also suggests that private tenants are more likely to be at risk of electric shock than owner-occupiers.
“With the private rented sector expanding significantly over the past decade – now comprising over 16.5% of all households – it is essential that electrical safety in the sector is properly regulated.”
The ESC’s recent research found 40% of landlords are unaware of their responsibilities when it comes to electrical safety and 1.3million tenants are currently waiting for problems to be fixed in their homes.
The ESC has identified other key changes which could help improve conditions for PRS tenants and assist landlords to engage in best practice.
