GMB warns of unfolding energy crisis in the UK worse than seen in the 1970's
Suggesting that price rises are down to green taxes is simply a smoke screen as is the outdated view that there needs to be more competition in the sector says GMB.
GMB, the union for energy workers, commented on recent energy price rises and green taxes.
Gary Smith. GMB national secretary for energy, said "there is an unfolding energy crisis in the UK worse than seen in the 1970s.
We have already been warned that the lights could go out this winter as not enough new capacity has been brought on stream to replace aging plant.
The suggestion by some of the big 6 that price rises are down to green taxes is simply a smoke screen. Likewise the outdated view that there needs to be more competition in the sector. Some of the energy companies' customer businesses lose money and the suggestion that others are going to be attracted into a market where margins are tight or they are making losses is fanciful.
The manner in which green taxes are applied does need to be debated. They apply to rich and poor in equal measure. That isn't right. It is also true that government plans to insulate homes are a mess. But it is vital that homes are insulated. Underlying prices are going up. They could double in the next decade easily. It is essential that those least able to heat their homes have them insulated.
We have an energy crisis in the UK and it needs a coherent national response."
