Government must act earlier on child poverty
In response to the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission’s second annual report, Kate Mulley, director of public policy, said:
“Poverty is robbing children of their life chances. All parties have to place this issue at the top of their agenda, and commit to a shift from managing the effects of poverty to tackling the roots.
“If the government acts earlier to break the cycle of disadvantage, there is a better chance of helping children reach their potential.
“Without it the social and financial cost of inaction will continue to grow, casting a shadow over young people’s futures.”
Action for Children’s full recommendations on early support can be found in the Stitch in Time report, produced in collaboration with Barnardo’s, The Children’s Society, NSPCC and Save the Children.
