Kris Hopkins to retain homelessness brief

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has announced that Brandon Lewis, the new housing minister, will not have the homelessness brief in his portfolio. Responsibility for this will continue to be held by Mr Lewis's predecessor, Kris Hopkins.

Jacqui McCluskey, Director of Policy and Communications, said:

“Whilst the homelessness and housing briefs being split is not ideal, it will at least provide some consistency with Kris Hopkins able to continue the work in this area that he started. In his time as Housing Minister, Mr Hopkins demonstrated a keen interest in tackling homelessness so the opportunity to continue the relationship we built and move forward with the projects he backed is welcome.

“We would, of course, be concerned by any signs that the Government was placing less importance on the issue of homelessness. However, we have not seen this to date and hope that helping people out of homelessness remains a priority.”
