Law Society condemns attack on Iraq refugee camp
The Law Society's Human Rights Committee has condemned a deadly missile attack on Camp Liberty in Baghdad, which has killed three residents and left 70 wounded.
According to reports, the attack on the refugee camp in the Iraqi capital started at midnight on Thursday 26 December.
The former US military base is used to house members of the People's Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI) who were previously located at Camp Ashraf.
In September, 52 members of PMOI were killed following an attack on Camp Ashraf.
The Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales condemned the latest attack in the strongest terms and reiterated its call for greater protections for the residents of the Iranian dissident camp. Most of the camp's 3,000 refugees were moved last year from Camp Ashraf.
Professor Sara Chandler, chair of the Human Rights Committee, said:
'Yet again, assurances from the UN and the US government for the safety and security of the Iranian dissidents have been found to be hollow. Refugees are 'protected persons' under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
'Urgent action is now needed to assist the wounded and prevent further atrocities on these displaced people. It is not enough to sit back and watch with horror as these attacks happen, the UN must support Camp Liberty's residents and protect their internationally recognised rights.'
