Mind, Rethink Mental Illness and their anti stigma campaign Time to Change have issued the following comment after a meeting with The Sun and the subsequent headline clarification in today's newspaper about their front page story ''1200 killed by mental patients" (7 October).

In a joint statement Paul Farmer, CEO of the charity Mind, Paul Jenkins, CEO of the charity Rethink Mental Illness and Sue Baker, Director of Time to Change, said:

"We met with staff from The Sun last week to discuss their recent coverage of mental health.

"It was a constructive meeting and we talked about the need for The Sun to broaden its campaign to focus on issues such as the impact of suicide, the need for crisis plans, early help for people with mental health problems and the physical health inequalities they experience.

"We are encouraged that they have published a clarification today, but what's more important is how they continue to cover these issues in future.

"We will be watching how the campaign develops with interest and encourage them to sign a pledge with Time to Change, the anti-stigma programme run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness."
