Ilford South MP Mike Gapes visited his local branch of William Hill last week, and left with £225 after placing a successful bet.

Mr Gapes met local staff at the bookmakers and learnt more about the issues affecting the betting industry.

William Hill gave him a free £50 charity bet which he placed on West Ham drawing in their match against Southampton - he even bet on the exact score of 1-1.

The bookmaker said his “exceptional West Ham knowledge” meant he won £225 for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

“It was great to come and see for myself how a betting shop actually operates,” he said.

“I was interested to hear and learn more about the betting industry and was impressed with not only the range of service and activities provided, but also with the responsible procedures in place to tackle under-age and problem gambling.”

Lewis Rogers, William Hill’s Public Affairs Manager, commented,

“William Hill was very pleased to welcome local MP Mike Gapes to one of our shops to highlight the positive contribution we make to the local community. We were particularly impressed by Mike’s football knowledge.”
