There must be a complete overhaul of Universal Credit to get it right - IPSE
IPSE agrees with the Work and Pensions Select Committee’s sensible recommendation that there should be a ‘wait and see approach’ before rolling out UC for all disabled self-employed people.
Twenty-two per cent of disabled people who are working are self-employed, and we know Universal Credit (UC) disproportionately affects the self-employed. Therefore, the government’s attempts to transfer disabled Employment and Support Allowance users onto UC without waiting for the results of its own trials are doubly damaging.
There are almost 4,400 disabled self-employed people receiving UC, and although there has not yet been a full impact assessment, anecdotal evidence tells us the system is already creaking in its infancy: there must be a complete overhaul to get it right.
