Local Government People draws together details of this week's local by-election result and changes to councils' political compositions.

Local authority by-elections held Thursday 4th December 2014:

Mansfield District Council – Netherfield: Labour gain from Independent Forum

Seymour, Karen Rachel Mary – Trade Union and Socialist Coalition – 29 (4.82%)
Walker, Sid – UK Independence Party – 225 (37.43%)
Wright, Lesley Sarah – Labour – 347 (57.75%) **elected**

Votes: 601*
Turnout: 27.23%
Majority: 122

By-election held following the death of Independent Forum councillor Derek Evans.

Rossendale Borough Council – Longholme: Conservative gain from Labour.

Barnes, Gary – UK Independence Party – 258 (22.37%)
McMahon, Annie – Labour – 390 (33.83%)
Charlton-Mockett, Mischa – Conservative – 505 (43.8%) **elected**

Votes: 1,153*
Turnout: 28.15%
Majority: 115

By-election held following the resignation of Labour councillor Liz McInnes on her election as MP for Heywood and Middleton.

Thurrock Borough Council – Aveley and Uplands: UK Independence Party hold.

Aker, Tim – UK Independence Party – 747 (41%) **elected**
O’Regan, John – Labour – 520 (28.55%)
Stringer, Eddie – Independent – 338 (18.55%)
Webster, Teresa – Conservative – 217 (11.9%)

Votes: 1,822*
Turnout: 28.42%
Majority: 227

By-election held following the death of UK Independence Party councillor Maggie O’Keeffe-Ray.

*NB: number does not include spoilt or rejected ballots.

Political compositions of the local authorities concerned:

Mansfield District Council: Labour 25, Independent Forum 10, Mansfield Labour 2011 2 – Labour controlled.

Rossendale Borough Council: Labour 23, Conservative 11, Community First 1, Independent 1 – Labour controlled.

Thurrock Borough Council: Labour 23, Conservative 18, UK Independence Party 6, Independent 2 – No overall control.
