We all must stand together, fight for a People’s Vote and reject the Government’s Brexit deal

3 min read

Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake has written to every ‘Remain’ MP on the back of the proposed deal this week. It is a call to arms to think of their constituents, and vote to give the people the final say on the deal.

Dear MP,

I am writing to you following the fallout from the Government’s publication of the Brexit deal. While the Liberal Democrats have been up for this fight consistently for the last two years, I know that now is the time when it really matters for every Parliamentarian to make their decision on the most important matter facing the UK.

It is clear that the Government’s deal is the worse of both worlds, leaving the UK as little more than rule takers when we used to be rule makers. The Government’s clear inability to meet its promises  which were always impossible to achieve has left the UK staring into the abyss, outright mutiny in the Cabinet and chaos in Parliament. Rather than providing the breakthrough to unite her party, the Government has unleashed the flames of division, which we all know will end in a No-Deal Brexit.

I hope you would agree, it is becoming starkly clear that there is no deal is better than the deal we have as EU members, something which some of us, led by the Liberal Democrats have always stated. We know that there is no way to prevent the severe damage the economy and communities in all of our constituencies will suffer unless Brexit is stopped. The Government’s own impact assessments leaked earlier this year suggest this, and the deal released last night confirms this.

It is our poorest constituents who will be hit hardest by the consequences of a No-Deal Brexit, crashing out of the Single Market and Customs Union. They will experience first-hand the cost of living rising and jobs drying up as businesses are forced to relocate abroad or suffer as a result of a loss of competitiveness, linked to new friction on the EU border.

Voters are realising that the Brexit they were promised will not materialise. I believe it is therefore our duty to fight to ensure they have a say on their future. And we must reflect on the credibility of the Referendum, when it is now clear that almost every basis upon which Brexit was put to the UK electorate in 2016 was fundamentally wrong. The country did not vote to leave at any cost, or in any circumstances, and it certainly did not vote to throw away as much as £350 million a week, precipitated by a weakened economy. It also did not vote to damage our union, did not vote to unleash divisions across the country. We simply did not vote for this chaos.

Now, as we move closer to the endgame and the meaningful vote in Parliament and the peril that lies ahead, it is time to stand up and be counted. I hope you will agree that we cannot stand idly by, but instead will unite together as an opposition to this Brexit. We must all ask ourselves what is the best deal, and where the country stands today, with polls showing an overwhelming support for a People’s Vote and the public calling for the UK to remain in the EU.

We all must stand together, we all must fight for a People’s Vote and we all must fight for another option, at a time of such despair which can offer hope, and which will reject the Government’s deal and reject Brexit.

I hope you will join me in backing a People’s Vote and will consider siding with the Liberal Democrats in the fight against Brexit.

Please confirm whether you will by replying ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to this email.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Brake MP
Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson
