Airbus graduates were on hand to inspire young people with their ‘fascination of flight’ experience at a special one-day event held at Chester Zoo recently.

During the event, children of all ages experienced first-hand the similarities between natural and mechanical flight by studying the flight physics of modern day aircraft against the unique characteristics of birds, butterflies and other flying insects which have intricate mechanisms in their wing structure, designed to achieve optimum efficiency in flight.

Jack Gannon, one of the Airbus graduate engineers at the event said: “Nature has been inspiring aviation for over 500 years, since Leonardo da Vinci first sketched his flying machines. We are constantly studying nature and how it has evolved efficient flight as inspiration for improving mechanical flight. It is a fascinating subject - we’ve got so much to learn from the natural world around us!”

Airbus’ presence at Chester Zoo is linked with its sponsorship of the zoo’s aviaries and the conservation work done on site as well as sponsorship of a conservation project in Tanzania. This year, Airbus is also sponsoring the Madagascan Sunset Moth at the BUGS! Exhibit to emphasise the work done around biodiversity and biomimicry.
