British Red Cross urges politicians to ensure support for victims of trafficking

Ahead of the second reading of the Modern Slavery Bill today, the British Red Cross urges all politicians to ensure the new law truly provides adequate protection for the victims of trafficking, and other acts of modern slavery.

The British Red Crosswelcomes the Bill as an important piece of legislation in consolidating existing law, but would recommend three additional points, namely

1. Any Trafficking Commissioner (Rapporteur) must be truly independent and seek to consult the voluntary sector on matters of importance.
2. Any care regime for victims after 45 days must be substantive and primarily recognise their needs as victims.
3. The immigration status of individuals who have been trafficked must allow for support and be in line with their status as victims. It must also allow effective protection from traffickers.

Furthermore, we are concerned that individuals with Asylum claims should have the same assessment of credibility as those who are European Union citizens.

Whilst we recognise the need to effective punishment of the criminality involved in these acts, we believe support for the victims is paramount, and are seeking a law that prevents any unintended punishment of victims.
