A new campaign has been launched to raise awareness that health professionals must be registered.

The Health and Care Professions Council(HCPC) said its ‘Be Sure’ campaign is aimed at care and nursing home staff and residents as well as carers and older people.

HCPC regulates health professions such as hearing aid dispensers, chiropodists and podiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians, as well as social workers in England.

It has produced a short film drama to help people understand the importance of checking that a professional is registered and explain how to raise a concern.

HCPCChair Anna van der Gaag said:

“There are hundreds of thousands of health and care professionals working in care homes, hospitals or clinics, on the high street and in people’s own homes. The vast majority of these professionals are practising safely and legally.

“However, this is not always the case and not all of these individuals are registered.

“On the very rare occasion that a professional on our Register does not meet our standards, we can take action which might include stopping them from practising. We also can take action if someone pretends to be registered when they are not.

"The film is a powerful tool through which to convey an important message to the public. Everyone should check our Register - just to be sure.”

To launch the campaign, the HCPCwill be screening the film at the National Care Forum conference on 28th October. The HCPC will also be at the Care Show in Birmingham on 12th to 13th November.

Anyone can check whether their health and care professional is registered with the HCPC by going to www.checktheregister.org
