College of Policing respond to HMCPSI/HMIC report  - "A joint inspection of the disclosure of unused material in volume crown court cases"

Rachel Tuffin, director at the College of Policing, said: “The disclosure of unused material is an important part of the criminal justice process which seeks to achieve justice for victims and a fair trial for defendants.

“As the professional body for the police, we recently developed entry level disclosure training for officers and updated an existing online package, although this has not been fully reflected in today’s report.

“We will now carefully consider the recommendation for us to develop classroom-based training, as there is an absence in the report of clear evidence that this model will address the issues identified.

“The College will continue its work to review training across criminal justice so that officers have access to the best available evidence, standards and development opportunities to protect the public.”

She continued:

“Policing is becoming ever more complex and the nature of the work done by officers and staff is changing.

“As the professional body for the police we are working hard to give our members access to the best available evidence, standards and development opportunities so the high standards expected of officers can be met.

“It is important to recognise the pressure on officers and staff and encouraging to see that trust and confidence in policing has been steadily rising to its highest rating in recent years.”
