Stepping up to the challenge for action on carbon emissions will not only speed our progress towards the net-zero goal, it also has the potential to drive valuable economic opportunities for the UK, says Rosa Wilkinson, Communications Director, Rosa Wilkinson.

The Committee’s work to identify priorities for action on carbon emissions is welcome. Stepping up to the challenge will not only speed our progress towards the net-zero goal, it also has the potential to drive valuable economic opportunities for the UK.

The businesses we work with at the High Value Manufacturing Catapult understand this. We’re helping them take on the carbon emissions challenge through our work as a key partner in the Faraday Battery Challenge developing new battery technologies and energy storage. We’re helping them replace fossil fuels with bio derived feedstock that would otherwise be burned or sent to landfill, and, of course, helping to make sure that the energy they consume doesn’t spew out huge carbon doses into our environment through the work of our team at the Nuclear AMRC.  That team is at the forefront of work with industry to support the UK’s existing nuclear reactors and develop the next generation of small modular reactors, driving down the cost of both nuclear new build and decommissioning while improving efficiency and safety.

Strong signals from Government now, whether on new nuclear power or in other areas, will spur investment in the innovation that means emissions tumble and global market opportunities are seized.
