Key incentives for SME house builder

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) welcomes Tim Farron’s renewed call for better incentives for SME housebuilders and he is right to recognise that regulatory and planning barriers are holding back high quality new development.

A key incentive for small builders would be for the government to offer relief from CIL and affordable housing contributions on less than 10 units to help unlock smaller development sites. Another helpful move would be to enable SMEs to participate in public sector land release programmes through selective subdivision of sites as part of disposal process. These regulatory and planning changes would enable small builders to deliver the much needed smaller plots of high quality housing and provide the “right” support for small housebuilders.

The NFB have identified other key areas to boost housebuilding in our 2015 manifesto and look forward to working with the next for the government to help deliver the 245,000 new homes needed every year to meet the demands of the future.
