A Mott MacDonald-led joint venture (JV) has been appointed by the Czech Republics Road and Motorway Directorate to modernise section 10 of the countrys D1 motorway.

The JV includes Czech consultants Dopravoprojekt Ostrava, joint-stock company SHB and engineers Stráský, Hustý and partners s. r. o.

Section 10 is a 6.5km stretch of the D1 located near the interchange between the villages of Hořice and Kobervice. The modernisation works will include renewing the pavement, widening the paved shoulders, demolishing and rebuilding an overpass and relaying subgrade cable services. The project will also involve the restoration of four bridges, including a double three-span bridge over the Švihov reservoir in Prague. Additionally, sewage and drainage systems for the road will be replaced and upgraded with additional oil safety catch basins.

Mott MacDonald will co-ordinate the activities of the JV and carry out comprehensive designs for the carriageway and bridge restorations using the CAD Civil 3D system. The consultancy will also prepare tender documentation and provide construction site support.

Jan Semerad, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “The D1 has the heaviest traffic of the Czech Republic’s entire motorway network and is a vital traffic artery in the country, connecting the three largest cities of Prague, Brno and Ostrava. This project aims to provide better accessibility on the road and minimise future traffic congestion.”

Design works are expected to be completed by the end of 2015 and construction the road completed in the middle of 2019.
