New appointments this week in UK politics, the civil service and public affairs

Dods People draws together a list of appointments in Westminster politics, the devolved administrations and the public affairs sector in the last week.


Houses of Parliament:

House of Lords

Lord Palumbo (Conservative, life peer) retired on 2nd September 2019.

House of Commons

Luciana Berger joined the Liberal Democrats (elected as Labour, was sitting as an Independent).

Phillip Lee joined the Liberal Democrats (formerly Conservative).

Guto Bebb, Richard Benyon, Steve Brine, Alistair Burt, Greg Clark, Ken Clarke, David Gauke, Justine Greening, Dominic Grieve, Sam Gyimah, Philip Hammond, Stephen Hammond, Richard Harrington, Margot James, Oliver Letwin, Anne Milton, Caroline Nokes, Antoinette Sandbach, Nicholas Soames, Rory Stewart and Ed Vaizey had the Conservative Whip removed and now sit as Independent.

Treasury Select Committee – John Mann appointed as interim Chair, a new Chair will be elected on Wednesday 11th September.

Selection Committee - Christopher Pincher, Mark Spencer and Craig Whittaker were and Rebecca Harris, Amanda Milling and Iain Stewart were appointed as members.

 

Government Departments:

Jo Johnson MP resigned as Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation.

Michelle Donelan was appointed as an unpaid Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department for Education as maternity cover for Kemi Badenoch MP.

Cabinet Office

Civil Service Pension Board - Margaret Edwards has been re-appointed as the Non-executive Chair.

Department for Culture, Media and Sport

Susannah Storey took up her role as Director-General, Digital and Media.

Department for Exiting the European Union

Susannah Storey left her role as Director-General.

Department for Work and Pensions

The Pensions Ombudsman - Caroline Rookes appointed as Chair on an interim basis.

 

Parties:

Conservative Party

1922 Committee – Graham Brady reinstated as Chair until the start of the next parliamentary session.

Scottish Labour

Shadow Cabinet appointments:

Richard Leonard remains as Leader and Spokesperson for Finance, Economy and Fair Work.

Elaine Smith named as Parliamentary Business Manager and Chief of Staff (formerly Shadow Cabinet Secretary for the Eradication of Poverty and Inequality).

Rhoda Grant named as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Jobs and Fair Work (formerly Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy).

Alex Rowley named as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Brexit and the Constitution (formerly Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government).

Iain Gray remains as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education, Skills and Science.

Monica Lennon remains as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport.

Claudia Beamish remains as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform.

Pauline McNeill named as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Equalities (formerly Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Equalities, Housing and Social Security).

James Kelly as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Justice (formerly Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance).

Claire Baker remains as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs.

Sarah Boyack named as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government.

Colin Smith named as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Transport Connectivity (formerly Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Connectivity and Transport).

David Stewart named as Shadow Cabinet Secretary for the Eradication of Poverty and Inequality.

 

Devolved Authorities:

Scottish Parliament

Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body - Jackson Carlaw resigned as a member.

Scottish Parliamentary Bureau – Elaine Smith replaced Rhoda Grant as the representative for Scottish Labour.

Economy, Energy and Fair Work Committee - Willie Coffey replaced Angela Constance and Richard Lyle replaced John Mason as a member.

Education and Skills Committee - Gail Ross replaced Gordon MacDonald as a member.

Equalities and Human Rights Committee - Angela Constance replaced Gail Ross as a member.

Finance and Constitution Committee - Gordon MacDonald replaced Willie Coffey and John Mason replaced Emma Harper as a member.

Public Petitions Committee - Gail Ross replaced Angus MacDonald as a member.

Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee - Emma Harper replaced Gail Ross and Angus MacDonald replaced John Mason as a member.

 

Local Authorities:

Kent County Council – Paul Carter to stand down as Leader on 17th October.

By-election Results 5th September

Coventry Council – Mattie Heaven elected for Wainbody – Conservative hold (caused by the death of Conservative councillor Gary Crookes).

Eden Council – Helen Fearon elected for Penrith South – Conservative gain (caused by the death of Independent councillor Paul Connor).

Kingston upon Hull Council – Leanne Fudge elected for St Andrew’s and Docklands – Labour hold (caused by the death of Labour councillor Nadine Fudge).
