No female PM ‘before 2015’
Bookmaker William Hill has said it is offering odds of 20/1 on there being a female Prime Minister before the end of 2015.
Yesterday Parliament paid tribute to Margaret Thatcher, with many MPs and peers noting her achievement as the country’s first female Prime Minister.
She became the first female party leader in 1975 and PM in 1979, but since then no other woman has held the top job, though minor parties such as the Greens and the SDLP have had female leaders.
William Hill is confident Mrs Thatcher’s achievement will not be matched anytime soon – they are offering 1/2 that there will not be a woman PM until 2020 or later.
They also have odds of 6/4 that there will be a female Prime Minister next between 2016 and 2019 inclusive.
The bookmaker has made women favourites to be the next leader of both main parties, with Tory Theresa May having odds of 4/1 and Labour’s Yvette Cooper on 5/2.
While William Hill has Ms Cooper as a 12/1 chance to be the next Prime Minister and Theresa May is on 20/1, Ed Miliband remains the favourite to succeed David Cameron, with odds of 4/6.
