North West veterinary surgeon Tony Buxton has been elected as chairman of the British Veterinary Association’s Members’ Services Group, with a commitment to increase support for new veterinary graduates.

Mr Buxton is a small animal practitioner working both in private first-opinion practice at The Vets @ Leigh Dogs and Cats Home, and at the University of Liverpool where he teaches and mentors veterinary students. He grew up in Liverpool and graduated from the University of Bristol vet school. He is currently the North West representative on BVA’s Members’ Service Group (MSG) and represents the region on BVA Council.

MSG is one of BVA’s main standing committees tasked with reviewing the membership package and developing new services that members will value. It also considers policy issues relating to the regulation and education of the veterinary profession, as well as veterinary wellbeing.

Commenting on his election as chairman, Tony Buxton said:

“I’m delighted to be elected as the new chairman of MSG, which deals with hugely important issues that are close to my heart.

“I would like to make support for new graduates and support for individual veterinary surgeons going through difficult times my main priorities. As individuals we all remember our first few weeks as a vet being a difficult and demanding time, and it’s even more stressful now with increasing client expectations and expanding clinical knowledge.

“Through MSG, BVA produces some excellent guidance for members and I hope to update and increase this helpful information.

“Regional representatives on the committee post all of our committee papers in the regional forums on the BVA community and I would encourage all BVA members to get involved with the issues and tell us your views.”
