Boris Johnson accuses MPs of 'sitting on their a***s' as he urges them to back early election

3 min read

Boris Johnson has accused MPs of “sitting on their a***s” and urged them to stop “holding the country hostage” and back an early election.

The Prime Minister is said to have torn into opposition members at a Cabinet meeting where he told ministers of his plans to push for a snap poll on 12 December.

He needs two-thirds of MPs to support his bid, but Labour and other parties have said they will not vote for the motion until the threat of a no-deal Brexit has been removed.

According to the Sunday Times he said: “There they are sitting on their a***s, luxuriating in their salaries.

“It’s morally wrong and we will hammer them. It’s a battering-ram strategy.

"We will hammer them day after day after day.”

If as expected MPs fail to back the early election motion, set to be tabled on Monday, Mr Johnson is said to want to try again rather than bring his Brexit deal back to Parliament.

The newspaper reports that Dominic Cummings, his most senior aide, told a meeting of special advisers on Friday evening: “We will have a vote on an election on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday.”

After the PM lost a vote on his Withdrawal Agreement Bill the EU is expected to grant an extension of Article 50 to January 2020 this week.

But he PM told The Mail on Sunday: "My worry is this Parliament will just waste the next three months like it’s wasted the last three years.

“If Parliament cannot agree a way forward, then it is time for a new Parliament – and the only means of doing this is via a General Election.”

He urged Labour to back his motion for an election on 12 December, saying: “If they refuse this timetable – if they refuse to go the extra mile to complete Brexit, I will have no choice but to conclude that they are not really sincere in their desire to get Brexit done.

“If they do not accept this offer, I will continue to campaign for an Election and show the people in this country the stark choice before them: a Conservative Government that will get Brexit done, deliver on their priorities and unite the country, or a Labour Party that will snarl us in further toxic debate and more delay.

“Parliament cannot hold the country hostage any longer. Millions of businesses and people cannot plan their futures.

“This paralysis is causing real damage.”
