CPRE comment on the Repeal Bill

Campaign to Protect Rural England

An estimated 80% of environmental policies in the UK are shaped by the EU, says CPRE.

As part of the EU, the UK has a shared body of environmental legislation. From biodiversity conservation to environmental quality and sustainable development, these laws protect our environment. An estimated 80% of environmental policies in the UK are shaped by EU law.

Commenting on the publication of the Repeal Bill today, Erica Popplewell, Head of Government Affairs at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), said:

“The Government’s aspiration is to be a world leader in environmental protection, and to leave the environment in a better condition than they inherited it. As the UK starts the legislative process to leave the EU, we want to see this becoming a reality. All existing EU environmental law should be converted into UK law, and the new domestic legislation needs the equivalent regulatory, monitoring and enforcement that EU institutions currently provide.

“As parliament rises next week, the real work is likely to begin in September. We will continue to scrutinise the process of the bill and to lobby for the retention of strong environmental protection.”
