At a briefing for journalists today, a Downing Street spokesman was asked whether the Cabinet discussed a new 'third way' Brexit customs proposal.

The spokesman said: "The PM looked forward to [the Chequers meeting on] Friday and the fact they would be having a full discussion there… that is what Friday is for... The intention of Friday is to set out further detail of our future relationship and deliver on the will of the British people. And the package that we bring forward will be something that we would hope everyone in the House and in the country can support."

NATO

Asked whether a Cabinet discussion about defence spending included the demand by Donald Trump for nations to contribute more to the Nato budget, the spokesman said: "What was discussed was the importance of burden sharing and of all Nato member states making progress towards that 2% target which you will know that we currently exceed...

"There was discussion in general about burden sharing and the president has set out his position on wanting other countries to contribute more to Nato but obviously as has the Prime Minister and others."

HIGH STREET BUSINESS TAXES

Asked whether high street firms were being charged too much in business rates compared with digital companies, the spokesman said: "There is a question as to whether digital companies are paying their fair share of tax and that is why we are looking into it. It is an international issue and that is why we are engaging with the OECD taskforce and the digital economy to achieve the necessary global reforms to the international tax framework. But we have said should there not be sufficient progress we will consider introducing measures unilaterally... The PM is a supporter of the high street and small businesses."

'BEST OF LUCK' TO ENGLAND TEAM

Asked whether the Prime Minister would be watching the World Cup game between England and Colombia tonight, the spokesman said: "The PM will be working in Number 10 tonight. I’m sure she’s hoping to see some of the game and obviously wishes the England team the very best of luck."
