I will be Prime Minister for at least another year – Theresa May

2 min read

Theresa May is adamant she will be in the top job for at least another year, despite rumblings of a leadership challenge.

The Prime Minister was asked about her longevity as a leader at the G20 in Hamburg.

Asked whether other world leaders are convinced she will still be attending international summits "in a year or two's time," she replied: “Yes. We will be playing our absolutely full part and I’ll be playing my full part and the issues that we are discussing are important.”

It comes after the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said earlier this week that Mrs May wanted to stay in post for her full five year term.

Mrs May has said she will serve as Prime Minister for as long as the Conservative Party wanted her to, after the disastrous result at the general election threw her premiership into doubt.

Asked if she was “full of regrets” after calling the general election and losing her majority, she said: “No. If we look at the general election, of course, the result didn’t go in the way that I’d hope.

“I think it was the right decision to actually call that election. I’d hoped for a different result.”

Since the poll on June 8 Mrs May has said little about her future.

On June 11 she refused to say whether she intended to serve a full five-year term, instead saying: "I said during the election campaign that if re-elected I would intend to serve a full term.

"But what I’m doing now is actually getting on with the immediate job.”
