Keir Starmer Congratulates Donald Trump On "Historic Victory"

2 min read

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has congratulated Donald Trump on his "historic election victory" in the US.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, Starmer said that "the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come".

While Trump's victory in the US presidential election was not yet officially confirmed at the time of writing, he had defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in a number of key swing states, putting him on course for a return to the White House.

“Congratulations President-elect Trump on your historic election victory. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead," the Prime Minister said.

“As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.”

Senior Labour MP Emily Thornberry, who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee, last night warned that the UK may be forced into a "temporary realignment" if Trump becomes president.

Thornberry told PoliticsHome that the Labour Government may have to "look again" at how it works with the US if Trump weakens American support for NATO.

The former shadow cabinet minister also said the UK will have "decide how we're going to deal with that" if Trump fulfils his threat to impose major tariffs on goods imported to the US from countries including Britain.
