NHBC Background

National House Building Council | National House Building Council

2 min read

The National House Building Council (NHBC) is the key standard setting body for new and newly converted homes in the UK. We are a non profit distrusting company and invest all profits into our core aim of raising standards of house building.

As NHBC is the largest private sector building control provider in England and Wales and with the largest private market share of new home warranties in the UK, we are in a position to collect vast amounts of information on house building, which we share with a range of partners. We provide Members of Parliament with quarterly statistics of house building in their constituency, the only source of such information. We also provide DCLG with regular statistics and ad hoc research projects, the most recent being challenges facing small and medium sized builders.

We work with governments across the UK and with all political parties to support the development of policy which support our aim of raising standards.

What we do

• Approximately 80% of all new homes in UK have our consumer protection
• Around 13,000 house-builders and developers are registered with NHBC
• 1.6 million homes currently protected by our warranty
• The largest Building Control Body in the UK
• The key driving force behind the creation of the Zero Carbon Hub and is its main private sector funder
• Provide research to the sector via the NHBC Foundation
