Theresa May: UK terror threat level raised to 'critical' after Parsons Green bomb

Theresa May: UK terror threat level raised to 'critical' after Parsons Green bomb
1 min read

The UK’s terror threat level has been raised from ‘severe’ to ‘critical’ after a bomb planted on a tube train burst into flames at Parsons Green station.

It is the highest threat level and means Britons will see more military personnel on the streets.

The device, which is thought to have only partially detonated, injured 29 commuters when it exploded at the west London tube stop yesterday morning.

In a statement on Friday evening, Theresa May said armed police and military personnel would be more visible over the coming days.

“For this period, military personnel will replace police officers on guard duties at certain protected sites,” she said.

“The public will see more armed police on the transport network and on our streets.”

“This is a proportionate and sensible step which will provide extra reassurance and protection while the investigation continues.”

The rise to 'critical' - which is the highest threat level - means the security services think another attack could be imminent.

So-called Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the bomb. A manhunt is underway to find the perpetrator.
