We need to accelerate the uptake of management apprenticeships and encourage all businesses to invest in the next generation of leaders, says Rob Wall at CMI. 


Given that we have 2.4m “accidental managers” in the UK, improving the quality of management and leadership is key to improving the quality of work and boosting UK productivity.

 

CMI analysis of ONS data suggests there are around 150,000 EU managers in the UK. We need an immigration system that ensures that talented managers are able to stay in the UK, and enables British businesses to attract and recruit the brightest and the best managers and leaders from the EU and from around the world.

 

We also need a skills system that develops home-grown talent. We need to accelerate the uptake of management apprenticeships and encourage all businesses to invest in the next generation of leaders.
