The British Plastics Federation welcomes the £2bn Green Homes Grant announced by the chancellor today.

As well as being good for the environment, we hope this stimulates wider demand within the construction sector and this is bolstered by the support package for homebuyers. Without plastic, the government will have great difficulty meeting energy efficiency targets within buildings.

We are pleased that the government plans to assist the hospitality sector, which has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plastic packaging plays a vital role in keeping down CO2 emissions as food is transported, and ensuring it arrives in a fresh condition for the catering world.

The creation of job opportunities for young people, including increasing the number of apprenticeships, is to be applauded. Manufacturing - and in particular plastics manufacturing - desperately needs fresh talent.

The plastics industry, current travails aside, offers terrific career prospects, with international horizons.
