CIWM comment on Defra's new Waste duty of care code of practice

CIWM has welcomed the publication of the new Waste duty of care code of practice by Defra today, commending its clarity and accessibility.

“It is important that the Code of Practice is clear and easy to understand for all stakeholders to help improve awareness of the principles of Duty of Care. It is not just about protecting human health and the environment, Duty of Care is also a fundamental to stemming the flow of waste materials to illegal operators. With waste crime on the increase, the industry is working hard through the ‘Right Waste, Right Place’ campaign and other initiatives to get the message out and ensure that people and businesses are not inadvertently ‘feeding’ waste crime because they are unaware of their responsibilities,” says CIWM chief executive Steve Lee.

“CIWM and many of its members also feel, however, that it is important not to lose some of the useful detail and best practice contained in the original guidance. This will be incorporated into the Right Waste, Right Place campaign led by the ESA, which will be expanded with significant additional funding from CIWM and ESAET later this Spring.”
