Electrical Safety First Welcomes Shelter’s Report into Rental Conditions and Retaliatory Eviction
Commenting on today’s report from Shelter into rental conditions and retaliatory eviction, Emma Apter at Electrical Safety First said:
“Everyone deserves to be safe in the place that they live. It is a fundamental part of our wellbeing and we therefore welcome Shelter’s report. Sadly, it reflects the all too common dangers faced by tenants, particularly in regards to electrical installations and appliances, and highlights that far greater measures are needed to help reduce these risks.
We have campaigned hard to have five-yearly checks on electrical installations made mandatory, in a similar manner to gas, and are also calling for obligatory electrical product checks. These measures would greatly reduce the risk posed to tenants.
That no such requirements currently exist for landlords is all the more significant given this report’s findings which indicate that 16% of renters experienced problems with electrical hazards last year. Given the rapidly expanding nature of the private rented sector better protection for tenants is more important than ever and the Government must now act swiftly”.
