New research from The Prince's Trust shows that one in six young people believe that they will “end up on benefits”, rising to more than one in three among those leaving school with poor grades.

The study has also revealed that young people with less than five GCSEs are almost twice as likely as their peers to believe that they will “never amount to anything”. Emma Scowcroft, Policy Manager at Action for Children commented: "For some young people Thursday's A-Level results will help to open the door to new education, employment and training opportunities. Sadly for others, as this new research shows, they will be left feeling less optimistic about their futures.”

“No young person should feel they will never amount to anything. We need to urgently improve the support that will enable young people to access the training and employment opportunities that are out there, and to build their confidence and belief that they can have a bright future.

"Young people need to be given a fighting chance- and we know that by offering training and education that is tailored to their needs and providing the right help at the right time, lives can be transformed.

"Being able to offer targeted, timely support to addresses young people's needs will tackle the barriers they face and give young people the stability and sense of self-worth to help them towards a happy and successful adult life.”
