Response to issues raised by tragic case of Daniel Pelka
Responding to the news reports surrounding the tragic death of Daniel Pelka, Action for Children calls for more to be done to protect vulnerable children.
Shaun Kelly, Head of Safeguarding for Action for Children said:
“This is a deeply tragic case, and it is always shocking to hear about cases of child cruelty like this. Sadly, the number of children dying at the hands of parents or carers has been consistent for many years. We also know that serious case reviews into these cases, to explore lessons that can be learnt, regularly identify similar issues.
“There is overwhelming evidence that early intervention is the most effective way to protect vulnerable children – and we want to see the Government and local authorities giving it the priority it needs. Spotting problems within families as early as possible can help stop them from becoming more deeply rooted, with tragic consequences for children.
“There is lots of positive social work going on up and down the country, with professionals effectively protecting vulnerable children and helping them to turn their lives around. However, we do need to look at how we implement the lessons that need to be learnt from these tragic cases, as well sharing examples of best practice.”
