A new scheme to develop expertise in the beef sector and encourage personal development in the industry is being launched.

AHDB Beef and Lamb is working with the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants (BIAC) to deliver Developing Beef Expertise, offering continuous professional development (CPD) to consultants and advisers who want to expand their beef knowledge.

An initial event, offering a taster of the programme and its proposed content, is being held in Warwickshire in September. Five further events, covering breeding, health and fertility, feed and forage, selection for slaughter and business improvements, are planned through to December 2016.

Liz Genever, AHDB Beef and Lamb livestock scientist and one of the programme coordinators, said: “We want to help develop beef expertise to ensure well-trained and experienced consultants and advisers continue to be available to the beef industry.

“The Developing Beef Expertise programme will produce a group of trained consultants and advisers that can be used to deliver at AHDB Beef and Lamb events, and help develop written material.

“In addition, it is a great way of making key people in the industry more aware of the tools and technical information available from AHDB Beef and Lamb.

“If it is successful, the hope is to roll the idea out for sheep consultants and advisers in 2016. “

The taster session will take place on 14 September, at Woodland Grange, near Stoneleigh, in Warwickshire, tying in to AHDB Beef and Lamb’s annual Research and Development workshop - Translating the latest research into practice.  Consultants, advisers, vets and industry representatives are welcome to the taster session and workshop, and both are open to people who aren’t members of BIAC.

“This is a great opportunity for our members to work with AHDB Beef and Lamb while collecting their hours for our CPD requirements”, Mike Greetham, chief executive of BIAC.

Please contact victoria@biac.co if you want more details or interested in attending the taster on 14 September.  To secure your booking for the taster session, a payment of £20 will be taken.

Please email karen.morris@ahdb.org.uk if you want to attend the free annual RD workshop on 15 September.
