Premier League success nets UK economy an extra £3.4bn, new report finds

The success of the Premier League is adding billions to the UK economy, a new report has found. The EY Economic Impact Assessment highlighted that the League is making a contribution of £3.4bn to UK GDP, whilst also supporting over 100,000 jobs.

The League and its clubs made a total tax contribution to the UK exchequer of £2.4bn in 2013/14, a figure that would pay for the salaries of 93,000 police constables (90% of all constables in England and Wales), as well as creating a much wider positive economic impact.

The research found that the Premier League’s financial strength also allows it to invest consistently in football, both centrally and through its clubs, boosting national and regional economic growth.

The Premier League says it has secured this achievement in recent years through a focus on delivering the best possible football competition, with compelling matches played in world-class stadiums full of passionate fans. This sporting success and fan interest generates income for clubs and facilitates the continued support to the wider English game outside the Premier League.

These clubs are then able to invest in players, facilities, youth academies and supporting and delivering a range of innovative projects in their communities.

Commenting on the report, EY’s Chief Economist Mark Gregory said: “The success of the Premier League, which is grounded in the quality of the football competition, has created a ‘cycle of growth’. This should help ensure that the significant contribution to the UK economy and society will continue to increase in years ahead.”

Praising the League’s contribution to UK regions, Huw Jenkins, Swansea City AFC Chairman said: “Being in the Premier League and the economic benefits that it brings has been key. Possible stadium purchase and expansion, continuing club growth and the city of Swansea being known around the world are all linked to our success on the Premier League stage.”

In a separate regional study, the South Wales Chamber of Commerce also noted that even towns within a 50 to 100 mile radius of Swansea had benefited from the football club’s success on the global Premier League stage.
