Artificial intelligence predicts Alzheimer's years before diagnosis - Alzheimer's Society comment

Dr James Pickett, Head of Research | Alzheimer’s Society

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology improves the ability of brain imaging to predict Alzheimer's disease.

We can’t prevent, cure or, even slow down the progression of dementia, so we need to harness new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) if we’re to see a revolution in dementia research.

While this new study is promising, it only looked at a very small number of people and many of them had already been referred to memory clinics. This technology will need to be tested on larger groups of people including people who don’t have any symptoms, before we can say if it can help identify people with Alzheimer’s early, and accurately.

Alzheimer’s Society is supporting research into AI including testing whether smart phone apps can spot the early signs of dementia. We’re still looking for people without dementia to take part in this research and they can sign up at www.alzheimers.org.uk/gamechanger.
