Commenting on a report today from the European Commission on UK Government support for Hinckley Point C, WWF said that support for new nuclear projects should be based on “robust economic evidence”.

Nick Molho, head of climate and energy policy at WWF-UK, said: "The suggestion by the European Commission that support for Hinckley Point C could crowd out investments in renewable energy, and would therefore do little to help decarbonise our energy system, is very concerning.

“Given the limited funding available to develop low-carbon infrastructure in the UK, the support that the Government has decided to provide to new nuclear projects must be based on robust economic evidence.

"Failing to do this would risk undermining the funding available to support renewable energy projects, which offer a much greater likelihood of significantly going down in cost in the near future.”
