Skills for Justice would like to invite practitioners, internal verifiers, assessors or HR managers from the custodial care sector to contribute to an important online consultation exercise to review and develop the sector's National Occupational Standards (NOS).

We are undertaking a review of the existing custodial care National Occupational Standards (NOS) and developing new NOS for the following specialist areas:

- Prison chaplaincy
- Safer custody
- Corruption prevention
- Videoing incidents
- Vulnerable prisoners
- Security vetting
- CCTV control room
- Lock maintenance

The custodial care NOS suite was developed in 2006 and last reviewed in 2009 and during this period there have been significant changes in legislation and Government policy covering prison establishments and work practices. It is essential that these changes are reflected in the NOS suite and that new NOS are developed to fill gap areas to make sure this suite is fit for purpose and that custodial care professionals perform their roles competently and effectively.

How can I get involved?

The online consultation and guidance can be found below:

Custodial Care Consultation Questionnaire

Guidance for reviewing custodial care NOS

The consultation is split in to a number of different sections and you only need to provide feedback on the NOS sections which are relevant to you.

If you have any difficulties opening the consultation using the links above, please get in touch and we will provide an alternative way for you to access it.

The closing date for responses to this consultation is 5pm on Friday 16 August.
