Queen’s Speech: Protect disabled from reforms
Ministers should be ensuring disabled people are not disadvantaged by the Government's widespread reforms, charity United Response argues ahead of the Queen’s Speech.
“My Government will introduce a Bill to… modernise social care across the country, enabling disabled people to have more choice and control over their care and support.”
The Queen’s Speech should bring forward legislation to enable disabled people to have more choice and control over their care and support.
Ministers should be striving to improve the lives of disabled people, ensuring adequate funding is available to support those who need care. Measures should be proposed to improve eligibility for care services, ending the need to limit support to only those with the highest needs.
The Government should continue to work constructively and cooperatively across all departments and with local authorities to ensure that disabled people are not disadvantaged by a combination of reforms to health, welfare and social care. To this end, the Queen’s Speech should include a commitment for the Government to conduct a cumulative impact assessment of all reforms which will affect the lives of disabled people.
