Our Work: Trophy Hunting
1 min read
We are campaigning for the UK Government to deliver on its manifesto commitment to ban on the import of hunting trophies. British trophy hunters pay large sums of money to kill wild animals, primarily in countries across Southern and Eastern Africa, for fun and for display. Studies over the years have demonstrated that trophy hunting negatively impacts populations of threatened and endangered species. Despite the efforts of the trophy hunting industry to greenwash its image, the so-called “conservation” benefits have failed to materialise along with the purported benefits to local people.
The Conservatives pledged to ban hunting trophy imports in 2019 but two Private Members Bills failed to become law. Labour Ministers have reaffirmed the current Government’s commitment to a ban, but a timeframe for the introduction of legislation has not been shared.
We are calling on the Government to introduce legislation to finally end the cruel and needless import of hunting trophies into the UK in the next Parliamentary session.
