Boris Johnson to promote female Tory MPs as he reshuffles his Cabinet

Boris Johnson to promote female Tory MPs as he reshuffles his Cabinet
2 min read

Boris Johnson will hand promotions to a string of female Conservative MPs as he carries out a major Cabinet reshuffle.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Suella Braverman and Gillian Keegan are among those expected to be handed plum jobs in the new-look government on Thursday.

Other up-and-coming Tory women will also be given ministerial experience, with a view to promoting them further in the future.

The changes will mean there is a 50-50 split between male and female Parliamentary Under-Secetaries of State, Downing Street said.

And the number of female members of the Cabinet will remain the same, despite speculation that a number of them were being lined up for the axe.

Number 10 also said that by the summer, the proportion of female Parliamentary Private Secretaries - the lowest rung of the ministerial ladder - will hit 60%, compared to 18% at the moment.

Elsewhere in the reshuffle, there will also be promotions for rising stars Oliver Dowden and Alok Sharma.

A No 10 source said: “The Prime Minister wants this reshuffle to set the foundations for government now and in the future.

"He wants to promote a generation of talent that will be promoted further in the coming years. He will reward those MPs who have worked hard to deliver on this government’s priorities to level up the whole country and deliver the change people voted for last year."

Chancellor Sajid Javid will keep his job, despite friction between the Treasury and Number 10, but Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace are among those whose jobs are thought to be at risk.
