Conservatives stretch opinion poll lead to 14 points as election day looms

Conservatives stretch opinion poll lead to 14 points as election day looms
2 min read

The Conservatives have stretched their lead over Labour as the election campaign enters its final three days, according to a new opinion poll.

The Survation study for Good Morning Britain suggests the Tories are now 14 points ahead of their main rivals, a jump of five points in a week.

It puts support for Boris Johnson's party on 45%, an increase of three points, with Labour down two on 31%.

The Lib Dems remain on 11%, the Brexit Party is up one point to 4% and the Greens have dropped two points to be on 2%.

If repeated on Thursday, those figures would be enough to give Mr Johnson a comfortable Commons majority.

Meanwhile, a BMG Research poll for The Independent also shows the Conservatives increrasing their lead over Labour.

It puts the Tories up two points on 41%, with Labour down one point to 32%.

Robert Struthers, BMG's head of polling, said Labour's efforts to hoover up Remain voters had "stalled".

He said: "Now, with four days left before polling day, there is little time for Labour to shift the dial."

Polling guru Sir John Curtice told Radio Four's Westminster Hour that the Consnervatives appear to be around 10 points in front, enough to give Mr Johnson a big enough majority to pursue Brexit, but that a hung Parliament could not be ruled out.

He said: "The Tory lead of 10 points is not that far ahead of the six-point figure, which is the point at which you say there’s a 50% chance of a hung Parliament.

"It’s held steady so far and the Tories have managed to retain their position but those last three days could still make a difference."
