Exclusive: The new left-wing party being founded by independent MPs including Jeremy Corbyn has descended into chaos after Zarah Sultana was accused of unilaterally launching its membership system.

Ex-Labour MPs Corbyn and Sultana jointly confirmed the formation of a new political party temporarily called 'Your Party' in July.

It came after Sultana quit Labour earlier that month and announced she would co-lead a new outfit with Corbyn – but the former Labour leader had not given his consent for the announcement.

On Thursday morning, an email was sent from [email protected] to supporters who had signed up for updates from the new party announcing that a membership portal had opened.

The new system, hosted on a separate website to the original 'Your Party' domain, offers a 'standard' membership at £55 a year and a concessionary rate of £25 a year. Over 22,000 people at the time of writing have paid to join 'Your Party'.

Corbyn, his allies and the other Independent Alliance MPs excluding Sultana have claimed that the new system is unauthorised, however. He posted an "urgent message" on X urging supporters to "ignore" the email.

"Legal advice is being taken," Corbyn's post reads. "If any direct debits have been set up, they should be immediately cancelled."

But Sultana and her allies are insisting that the membership system is legitimate and encouraging supporters to sign up through it.

Sultana told PoliticsHome: “As we set out in our email to members earlier this week, membership is now open through a safe and secure platform. More than 20,000 people have already joined us, and that number is only going to get higher!”

A source aligned with Sultana confirmed to PoliticsHome: "Yes, Zarah has launched the membership, but I would argue it was as per the roadmap sent out by Your Party earlier this week."

They claimed the roadmap was sent out unilaterally by allies of Corbyn, despite Sultana telling the rest of the group she did not agree to its publication.

PoliticsHome understands that Sultana objects to the conference arrangements committee not being gender-balanced and claims the other MPs in the Independent Alliance group have refused to correct this. She did not want other communications to go out before the make-up of the committee was changed.

The data connected to donations is controlled by MoU Operations, a company set up in April. Its directors are former North of Tyne mayor Jamie Driscoll; Andrew Feinstein, who stood against Keir Starmer in his constituency last year as an Independent; and former Labour MP Beth Winter.

After PoliticsHome's reporting, Sultana made these accusations public in a post on X, which also said she had been "sidelined by the MPs named in today's statement and effectively frozen out of the official accounts".

"My sole motivation has been to safeguard the grassroots movement that is essential to building this party. Unfortunately, I have been subjected to what can only be described as a sexist boys' club," the MP wrote.

She added: "I regret that today's statement has misrepresented the situation... I am calling on Jeremy to meet with me and agree to make public all agreed structures, processes and decision-making protocols."

Several sources involved in the new party told PoliticsHome that a formal split in 'Your Party' now appears inevitable.
