Jeremy Corbyn says he will ‘probably’ become Prime Minister within next year

2 min read

Jeremy Corbyn has said he will ‘probably’ become Prime Minister within the next 12 months after falling short on his rumoured ambition to be in Number 10 by Christmas.

The Labour leader reportedly told Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis he would be in the top job “in six months” when the festival took place in June.

However, in an interview with Grazia he said he expected a snap election by the end of next year, which he “will probably win,” adding that he is “ready to be prime minister tomorrow”.

His comments coincide with those of shadow cabinet colleague Diane Abbott, who said Labour would move "decisively above the Tories in the opinion polls" in 2018.

“I have a confidence about that. The Tories are in a state, their negotiations are a shambles, last week they couldn’t even get their legislation through the House of Commons so it could well be in 2018 that we’ll get a General Election, she told BBC Newsnight.

Mr Corbyn also told the magazine he was “horrified and appalled” by the recent allegations of sexual harassment in Westminster although he insisted Labour was “not dealing with huge numbers” of claims.

“I think sexism is a real challenge in society that needs to be dealt with. The allegations are all investigated and dealt with as appropriate.

“We support the people making them as well as the people being alleged against.”

"We have a process, including a confidential hotline and an independent person to investigate.

“I'm utterly determined all Labour Party events will be a safe place for women to go to."

He added: “We’re dealing with some cases and they are of course disturbing when you get them.

Elsewhere Mr Corbyn revealed that he has not been invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in May, but described the princess in waiting as “clearly a very decent person”.

The long-term republican added that weddings are “pretty pricey” and that he thought the cost of theirs “should be borne by the family themselves”.
